Are You Wiser Than a Locust?
WISDOM
Proverbs 2:6-7 - "For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity"
Someone told me owls weren't actually that wise. wive's tale. however, in proverbs, some animals are considered "wise" including ants, rock badgers, locusts (yup, those crazy plague-making bug disasters!), and lizards (Prov 30:24-28). it's not because they're smart. they're not as intelligent as humans of course. what makes them wise is that they now how to navigate life skillfully.
that's wisdom? guess that counts me out.
In Proverbs 2:6-7 though, Proverbs shows just how accessible that wisdom which helps us navigate life is: God gives it freely! i think in my own life, how haphazard i am about doing personal devotions. And i'll talk to my accountability partner and i'll pray to God to help me be more consistent in doing devotions because i understand and see what a difference they make in my life. I know when I'm reading the Bible more, then my life, particularly in character, is changed more. I am more attuned to Christlike humility, patience, and service instead of Justinlike selfishness, laziness, and anger.
And yet, I still don't do devotions every day. Why?
I think it comes down to Proverbs 2. I must not really seek God's wisdom. i believe that on the general day i probably have pretty high confidence that i have "enough" wisdom to do all i need and want to do. to handle the general situations that come across me. Not a very big picture of reliance on God is it? Or trust? Or faith?
Proverbs says the wisdom of God should be a treasure i seek after. like seeing a pack of money lying down in the park, do i treasure God's wisdom? like silver and gold? Do I see the opportunity to have God's wisdom that He gives freely to those who ask (prov 2:6) and take it?
God's Word is a gift. and i have more bibles than one man can read. If I really seek the knowledge of God, I need to seek the Word of God. And God will grant me wisdom. and understanding. and i will grow in my relationship with God in my understanding and reverence/fear of the Lord.
What greater treasure is there than that?
Besides, gosh darnit, I want to be wiser than a locust.
Father,
before I do devotions in the morning or at night.
before i try to read your Word daily. or weekly.
before i pray.
before I eat, drink, and sleep.
before i waste time. make time. lose time
before i finish. before i start.
before it all Lord.
give me a heart that seeks your wisdom. give me a heart that seeks your understanding. give me a heart that has a desire to follow your ways and know your ways and be soaked in your ways. give me a heart that wants more of you and less of me.
give me a heart that is yours.
for only you can.
your son,
Justin
